Day 67: ‘To This Day’… for the bullied and beautiful

Shane Koyczan grew up listening to the rhyme about ‘sticks and stones.’To this day, kids are still defined by the names they’re given when they’re young. In this talk, Koyczan gives a powerful reading of his poem, ‘To this Day’, supported by animation and classical music.

There are heart- rending case anecdotes and inspirational quotations within the poem from the poet/author/musician.

“To this day, he is a stick of TNT lit from both ends, could describe to you in detail the way the sky bends in the moment before its about to fall, and despite an army of friends who all call him an inspiration, he remains a conversation piece between people who can’t understand sometimes being drug free has less to do with addiction and more to do with sanity. “

“We were freaks; lobster claw boys and bearded ladies.. oddities juggling depression and loneliness, playing solitaire and spin the bottle, trying to kiss the wounded parts of ourselves and heal, but at night, while the others slept, we kept walking the tightrope.”

“Our lives will only ever continue to be a balancing act that has less to do with pain and more to do with beauty.

  1. His voice is what makes this video this video. His voice is what makes it so moving. You can tell he is feeling what the video is showing. It makes it real. I teared up as I watched it. Such a powerful message.
